How Acupuncture Can Help Overcome Lower Back Pain

It is estimated that nearly 80% of people will cope with low back pain in their lives. With so many people suffering from this problem, it is not surprising that acupuncture and other low back pain treatments have become so popular. Fortunately, research shows that acupuncture is an effective way to treat various low back pain problems.

Acupuncture and traditional treatment

A review of medical research shows that acupuncture is a viable option for treating back problems and it can also alleviate the pain of sciatica. In fact, these studies show that acupuncture provides more effective pain relief than traditional back pain treatment. Acupuncture is recommended by the American Pain Society and the American College of Physicians when more traditional medical methods do not work.

The reasons for acupuncture treatment of back pain

The roots of acupuncture can be traced back to ancient China more than 2,500 years ago. This involves inserting a fine hair pin into various energy points around the body. According to Chinese medicine theory, there are more than 365 acupoints on the human body. An energy called Qi [pronounced chee] flows through paths or merdians, which connect these points like a grid. Inserting a needle at the appropriate point along these meridians helps to correct this energy imbalance or blockage and leads to pain relief and better overall health.

On a more scientific level, some experts believe that this relief comes from the stimulation of the central nervous system, triggering chemicals released into the brain, muscles and spinal cord. Some people believe that these chemicals either produce overall well-being in the body, or they can actually change the way pain is felt and/or experienced.

Others believe that acupuncture can accelerate electromagnetic signals in the body. These signals can stimulate chemicals, such as endorphins, to relieve pain and even affect the body's own immune system cells. Other theories suggest that acupuncture releases natural opioids from the brain and may even alter the brain's chemical response by releasing neurohormones and neurotransmitters from the brain throughout the body. All of these are ways to relieve pain.

What should acupuncture consider?

Acupuncture is quickly becoming one of the most common treatments for low back pain. It is worth noting that the US Food and Drug Administration has removed acupuncture needles from the "Experimental Medical Devices" category and now regulates the practice of American acupuncture.

Whether it is for sciatica to relieve pain or other back problems, consider something and study before seeking treatment. It is best to seek a licensed acupuncturist [L.Ac.] certified by the National Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Accreditation Council [NCCAOM]. It is also recommended that you understand what other people think about any acupuncturist you might be considering.
