Asthma and allergies - Is Vikane termite fumigation for you?

For some people with asthma and allergies, termite fumigation can cause serious problems. Vikane is a common chemical treatment for dry wood termites. It is a gas used to relate to the roof of termites. This means that your entire home will be packaged in a place that looks like a tent. They then pumped Vikane Gas [also known as sulfuryl fluoride] into the interior and cycled with the fan for a day. The next day, the tent was taken down and the house was broadcast until Vikane Gas was at a safe level to enter. It is safe to return to the inside on the third day. Usually people worry that they will fumigate termites and think that the gas will stick to the furniture and the countertops, but this is not the case. This happens with sulfuryl fluoride gas. It turns out that after the house is broadcast, a small amount of residual Gas is completely safe for human breathing.

The precedent statement is the whole truth that the termite industry believes. I have several customers with severe allergies who can't enter the sulfuryl fluoride gas to fumigate the house for more than two months because they start to have allergies as soon as they walk into the house. Most people with allergies are very sensitive to this gas and must be very careful to avoid it until it is completely dissipated at home. Two months is the longest time I have seen in 15 years, but I am sure there are exceptions.

In addition to fumigation, is there any way to get rid of dry wood termites in your house? Killing termites is safer than using sulfuryl fluoride. The method is the same, they are arranged in the house, and then they extract calories instead of Vikane. This is a safer option and you can enter the house the same day they move the tent to the house. This heat treatment works well and does have problems, but it is safer than sulfuryl fluoride gas which is toxic to humans. The benefit is that the cost is roughly the same.

In short, termite fumigation has serious problems for some people with asthma and allergies. I personally know that several people are allergic to the Vikane Gas residue in their home within two months of fumigation. There are safer alternatives such as termite heat treatment. The costs are similar in both cases. Be sure to review all alternatives before deciding. Discuss the two treatments with a professional and get the right answer for your case. If you feel that you are affected by Vikane Gas, please consult your doctor immediately.
